Over a hundred people had gathered in the relatively small conference room, the large meeting table had been moved, and chairs provided for most of them to sit. Still, there were plenty of people still standing, leaning against the wall, and others, like Alice, sitting on the floor at the front of the gathering. 

The yearly company meeting had brought people from many different branches to the office she’d only just started working at last month, some of them she’d only communicated with over email, over half of them she’d never met before. They were all her colleagues though and most of them seemed just as bored with the presentation they were watching: end of year numbers, next year’s goals, colleagues who retired and new hires. Alice was one of those last ones and waved awkwardly to the crowd behind her when she was named. 

The temperature was rising quickly with so many people in the room and it was getting hard to breathe. Alice was looking forward to the end of the presentation so they could head out. There would be drinks and food provided and she’d be able to get to know some of her other colleagues. 

The company CEO however, seemed to keep on going. Alice had met him only once before, her own boss who was standing beside the CEO, dealt with her branch’s day-to-day business. 

The meeting finally seemed to be heading to a conclusion when one of the men she didn’t know was called to the front, one of her colleagues from a different branch. Last month each employee had to fill in several review questionnaires, grading their coworkers on their skill, work-ethic, etcetera. Apparently, the man who’d just made his way to the front had the highest score of everyone in the entire company, earning himself an applause and a bottle of champagne. 

“For the next reward, I’d like to invite Alice up front,” the CEO announced after her colleague had returned to his seat. 

Confused for a moment, Alice looked behind her, to see if there was any other Alice at the company. She couldn’t think of any reward she’d be eligible for. When she looked at her boss however, he nodded at her encouragingly, motioning her to stand up. 

Slightly nervous, Alice got up in front of the crowd and made her way to the front. 

“Welcome Alice, you’re probably wondering why you’re up here?” the CEO asked, loud enough for the gathered crowd to hear. 

“Yes, sir,” Alice replied. 

“Well, new this year, we’re not only rewarding who scored highest on last month’s reviews, but who scored lowest as well.” 

Alice blushed. She’d scored lowest?  

“Do you have any idea who might have that lowest score?” The CEO asked teasingly. 

Alice’s blush deepened, she knew what he was doing, setting an example so that people would work harder to not be in her shoes next year. It was playful in a way, but still embarrassing. It also wasn’t fair. Her reviews hadn’t even been that bad. Her colleagues didn’t know her very well yet, she’d only started last month. So, her scores had been perfectly average, no bad grades but no good ones either. Fair for someone you didn’t know, but obviously lower than anyone else who’d worked at the company for a longer time. 

“Me, sir?” she asked sheepishly, deciding that all she could do for now was go along with it. 

“That’s right,” the CEO replied with a grin, “So we got you a little something as well.” 

From behind the table, he picked up a large package wrapped in cloth and handed it to her. 

It was heavier than Alice expected. Curious to what kind of gag-gift they’d give the lowest scoring employee, she unwrapped her reward. In front of the large crowd, she revealed it to be a heavy wooden paddle.
